Perpetuum - Cover Page - 2021-01-10.png

Perpetuum began as a rhythmic idea that explores the relationship between duple and triple meter, and how syncopation plays a role in blurring these lines. The title comes from the idea that once introduced, the rhythmic motif, or a variation of it, is present throughout the piece, driving it to the final climax.

The piece opens with the introduction of the basic rhythmic motif by the marimba, followed by the melodic theme in the low brass and winds. These build to a brief climax after which the rhythmic motif is developed before the return of the melody. The next section expands the melodic material while being accompanied by a variation of the rhythmic motif. Following this, the rhythmic ideas are developed by the whole band, incorporating the melodic material to build to a final climax.

Perpetuum contains solo opportunities for multiple instruments, as well as challenging ensemble sections.
