The Huron Carol has been attributed to the Jesuit Jean de Brebéuf who is thought to have written the words in the early 1640's to the tune of a folk song, Une Jeune Pucelle. As with many Christian impositions on First Nations people and culture, the song has a questionable past. I refer you to the following sites for more information on the history of the piece:

I chose to arrange this piece for choir because of the haunting melody, and also in the hopes that anyone who performs it would investigate further into its history, as well as the history of our First Nations people.
